陸に上がった河童、ジャズ喫茶を見つける

ひとりの河童が夜の町を歩いている。河童は普段川の中や川辺で暮らしていて、町を歩くのは初めてだ。頭の上のお皿が乾かないよう、ハンチング帽を手に持っている。見つけたのは黒いテントの不思議なお店。細く急な階段の上に「ジャズ喫茶」があるらしい。「ジャズって何？」気になった河童はハンチングをかぶり、階段を上がる。黒いドアの真ん中に六角形にくり抜かれたガラス窓から中を覗いてみると、怖いところではないみたいだ。震える手でノブを回し、そっとドアを開けると、店内には大音量で音楽が流れ、マスターが「いらっしゃい」という仕草で迎えてくれた。エクストリーム・シャイの河童は「あの、ジャズって何ですか」と訊こうとするが、その声は河童自身にすら聞こえないほど小さい。河童はソファ席に座り、メニューを見てみた。カフェオレって何だろう？注文してみるとお椀に見たこともない飲み物をつくってくれた。なんていい香り！河童はカフェオレの中に入ってしまいたいと思いながら、音楽にうっとりと聴き入る。ジャズはいつもの川の中とはまるで違う世界のことみたいだ。

English: A kappa is walking through the town at night. He usually lives in or near the river, and this is his first time walking through the town. He holds his hunting cap in his hand to keep the plate on his head from drying out. He finds a mysterious shop in a black tent. It seems that there is a “jazz cafe” at the top of a narrow, steep staircase. “What is jazz?” The kappa is curious, so he puts on his hunting cap and goes up the stairs. Looking inside through the hexagonal glass window in the middle of the black door, it doesn’t seem like a scary place. He turns the knob with trembling hands and opens the door gently, and loud music is playing inside the shop, and the owner welcomes him with a gesture of “Welcome.” The extremely shy kappa tries to ask, “Um, what is jazz?” but his voice is so quiet that even the kappa himself can’t hear it. The kappa sits on the sofa and looks at the menu. What is cafe au lait? He orders it, and the owner makes a drink he’s never seen before in a bowl. What a nice smell! The kappa listens to the music enthusiastically, wanting to dive into the cafe au lait. Jazz seems like something from a different world than the usual river.
